Mercy Memorial Kicks Off Summer Volunteen Program
Ardmore — For the 16th year, junior high and high
school students get a chance to take part in Mercy Memorial’s volunteen
program. From June 4th to August 3rd students between the ages of 14 and
18 volunteer at least one four-hour shift per week.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for these students,”
said Shelly Antuna, manager of volunteer services at Mercy Memorial.
“Not only do they fulfill a need with the patients, they also learn
about the many facets of healthcare for future career options. This is a
great way for teenagers to participate in activities during the summer.
Parents, too, can be encouraged that their children are experiencing the
value of giving and learning.”
Volunteens work in departments such as the intensive
care unit, information desk, plant maintenance, out-patient surgery and
health information management. They interact with patients by delivering
flowers and newspapers, and even escorting guests.
“This is a win-win program for everyone,” said
Antuna. “It’s great for Mercy Memorial, our patients and the students.
It gives teenagers the opportunity to participate in an activity that
helps others by simply giving of their time and talents.”
Volunteens and a parent must attend orientation on
Tuesday, May 29 at 2 p.m. For more information or to apply, contact
Antuna at (580) 220-6871 or Christie Claborn at (580) 220-6635.
