Mercy Offers Safe Sitter Training

Oklahoma City—When it comes to your kiddos, you can never be too safe. So whether you have a child who baby-sits or you employ babysitters to watch your children, Mercy’s Safe Sitter training is more than a good idea.

Mercy annually offers a two-day Safe Sitter course. The program follows a nationally recognized curriculum and includes how to avoid and manage accidents, with a special emphasis on what to do in case a child is choking.

“The program got its start in 1980 after a small child died because they choked on breakfast food,” said Debi Bocar, RN, PhD, a Safe Sitter instructor for the Mercy class. “If the babysitter had known what to do, the child might still be alive today. This class is critical in teaching babysitters how to handle emergencies.”

Participants also learn the basics of starting a babysitter business. Class format includes hands-on practice in rescue skills, small group discussions and planning creative activities for different ages.

Safe Sitter will be held June 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Mercy Conference Center. For $50, children ages 11 to 13 will participate in mock rescue incidents with manikins and take part in group discussion and role-playing. Pre-registration is required. For more information, call Mercy Health Direct at 752-3600.

Mercy Health Center, the only Magnet hospital in Oklahoma and among only 3 percent of hospitals in the nation to be awarded Magnet status, is a member of Mercy Health System of Oklahoma and the Sisters of Mercy Health System. Magnet-designated facilities: report higher patient satisfaction rates, deliver better patient outcomes, provide more nursing care at the bedside of patients and consistently outperform non-magnet organizations.
