Mercy Names Physicians as Leaders

Oklahoma City — Mercy has named Cullen Thomas, M.D., as president of Mercy Physicians and James Dixson, M.D., as division president of Mercy’s primary care physicians.

“Both Dr. Dixson and Dr. Thomas will be instrumental in developing and growing new partnerships with Oklahoma physicians which will allow Mercy to serve patients better,” said Di Smalley, president of Mercy West Communities (Oklahoma). “Today’s health care is complex for both providers and patients, but Mercy is committed to finding solutions to these challenges. Together, we will chart a path for the future.”

Dr. Thomas, who served almost three decades as a general surgeon at Mercy, is also a lawyer and a member of the Oklahoma and Arizona Bars. As a surgeon, he specialized in laparoscopic general surgery, including colon, stomach, biliary and small bowel. For the past 10 years, he has served as president and chairman of the Board of Surgical Specialists of Oklahoma – a 40-physician group in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Dixson, an internal medicine physician, was the first physician to join the Mercy Health Network in 1991 and as president of the group, he has led it to be the strongest and largest group of primary physicians in the state. Today, the group includes more than 60 family practice, internal medicine and pediatric physicians, as well as advance nurse practitioners and physician associates, who together serve 11 metro area clinics.

“Cullen and Jim will continue to be key leaders as Mercy focuses on becoming a physician-led and professionally managed team across Oklahoma,” said David Tew, chief operating officer of Mercy West Communities (Oklahoma). “We are responding to the needs of the many communities we serve by working with those who provide the care.”

Dr. Thomas has three grown children. He and his wife, Bonnie, enjoy their four grandchildren. Besides spending time with family, his interests include writing, golf and photography. He also serves as an elder at New Covenant Christian Church.

Dr. Dixson and his wife, Patricia, have been married 41 years and have two grown children. He is a member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Edmond and serves on the board of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the board of directors for Edmond’s Good Samaritan Health clinic. Dr. Dixson is also a board member for Catholic Charities.

Mercy Health Center, the first Magnet hospital in Oklahoma, was recently re-designated Magnet – an even greater accomplishment the second time around. Only 6 percent of hospitals nationally are Magnet designated and of those, only 2 percent earn re-designation.
