Mercy Offers Diabetes Classes to Yukon
Yukon— As the only Recognized American Diabetes
Association program in Yukon, Mercy Health Center offers a monthly
diabetes management class to area residents at Mercy Health Canadian
County Clinic.
“This class really helps people with diabetes
understand that they can take control of the disease and that there are
many options,” said Kathi Miller, Mercy’s diabetes program manager. “A
lot of people who take the class say that it’s the first time they’ve
understood the disease process. It’s the light bulb moment for them.
Once they understand how the disease progresses, they see why it’s
critical to make lifestyle changes. They learn that complications from
diabetes can be delayed or prevented, and they also learn that their
blood sugar can be controlled.”
The class, offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. the
second Monday of every month, is led by both a Mercy nurse and dietitian
with specialized training and knowledge in diabetes management. Topics
covered include: proper nutrition, physical activity, medications,
monitoring, disease process and preventing, detecting and treating acute
complications. In addition, participants learn how to prevent, detect
and treat chronic complications through risk reduction, goal setting and
problem solving.
“This is a perfect class for people just diagnosed
with diabetes or someone who hasn’t had any diabetes education in
several years because new information is constantly available,” said
Miller.
Consults and follow-up sessions are also provided at
a later date for participants (and includes more individualized
attention). To participate in the class, which includes a maximum of
five students, plus a family member or friend, a physician referral is
required.

program at 936-5644. Yukon classes are held at Mercy Health Canadian
County Clinic, 520 S. Mustang Road in Yukon.
