Make Healthy Habits Happen in 2007

Oklahoma City — By taking some simple steps this month, Oklahomans can eat healthier, feel better and exercise smarter.

Beginning January 15, Mercy will offer a 30-minute Healthy Habits class every Monday from 12:30 to 1 p.m. with simple tips to help jumpstart a healthier lifestyle.

“It’s critical that we begin to eat healthier foods and exercise smarter,” said Lori Manning, Mercy dietitian. “It’s not about our waistlines. It’s about feeling better, having more energy and finding a better balance in life.”

Participants will focus on three simple steps each week to eat better, exercise more efficiently and find ways to de-stress and simplify life. Unlike other structured diet plans, this class won’t include any calorie counting or food records.

“The key to long-term health is making small, simple steps and staying with them over the long haul,” said Manning. “When people make huge changes, they can’t maintain them. Besides providing some simple ways to exercise and eat better, we also want to provide people with some ways to simplify life. One idea we will offer is to find one closet or drawer or cabinet each week to clean out. That’s doable. But when we try to do everything all at once, like trying to organize the entire house or start some impossible fitness program, it’s just too much. It really takes simple steps, one day at a time, to make lifestyle changes.”

The four-week program will be held in Mercy’s conference center. Program costs $15 per person. Class size is limited. For more information or to register, call 752-3087.

Mercy Health Center, the only Magnet hospital in Oklahoma and among only 3 percent of hospitals in the nation to be awarded Magnet status, is a member of Mercy Health System of Oklahoma and the Sisters of Mercy Health System. Magnet-designated facilities: report higher patient satisfaction rates, deliver better patient outcomes, provide more nursing care at the bedside of patients and consistently outperform non-magnet organizations.
