Mercy Cancer Services
Patient Stories
Kay Oliver, Mercy Foundation president and a breast
cancer survivor herself, often shares with new cancer patients an image
that resonates with many. When she began chemo treatments in 1998, she
recalled a hood ornament she had seen once that had adorned a classic
car.
“It’s the head of a woman with her hair flying
backward,” recalls Kay. “She is facing forward into the wind and that’s
what you have to do when you have cancer. You have to look straight
ahead and you have to keep moving forward. Whatever the elements—whether
it’s rain, wind or a storm—you have to move head on into it, never
looking to the right or to the left. You have to get through the cancer
and you have to face into the wind.”
At Mercy, our team joins hands and helps cancer
patients and their families weather all the storms, from the trivial to
the most traumatic. It takes everyone together to make the Mercy
difference. Hearing the words of Mercy patients, you will find stories
of hope, grace and most of all incredible strength.
