Health Center Foundation
Continuing The Legacy
On February 11, administrators, physicians, donors and
co-workers gathered to celebrate the grand opening and blessing of Mercy's
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This 42-bed,
state-of-the-art unit is 45,000 square feet, or one wing of the hospital’s
fifth floor, allowing them to accommodate twice as many babies as before.
“It’s exciting to see this incredible facility come to
fruition,” said Kay Oliver, Executive Director of the Mercy Foundation.
“Just three years ago, the Foundation was tasked with raising $2.5 of the
$8.5 million needed for this facility. I approached the Foundation Board
with this capital campaign and, under the skillful leadership of Kathy Brown
and Steve Katigan, campaign co-chairs, the community support has been
overwhelming.”
The Mercy NICU is one of only three Level III NICUs in
the greater metro area.
Other features of the new NICU include:
-
Family Gathering Room – a convenient place for
family and friends to congregate. Comfy furniture, WiFi and other
amenities
-
16 Private Rooms – Allowing parents greater access
to their newborn and increased opportunity for hands-on care before
taking baby home.
-
13 Semi-Private Rooms – Allowing the more critical
babies close observation by highly skilled nurses while still giving
parents privacy.
-
2 Lactation Rooms – Offers breastfeeding mothers
convenience and complete privacy.
-
Nurse Stations – All equipped with the latest
monitoring equipment and all located in a central area.
-
Secure Entry – Provides greater safety for babies
and peace of mind for stressed parents.
“This new facility enhances the unprecedented care
offered by the Mercy’s NICU team,” said Oliver. "We are proud to be
opening doors to Mercy’s new NICU and continue providing the best care
possible for the patients and families who rely on us.”
