All about breastfeeding

Breastfeeding provides a unique bonding experience between you and your baby and absolutely the best nutrition for baby.

What does research show about breastfed infants?

  • Fewer illnesses and milder effects when illness does occur

  • Fewer ear and diarrheal infections

  • Less likely to be admitted to the hospital during their first year

  • A third less likely to die of SIDS

  • Their risk of developing diabetes is cut in half if they are breastfed a year or more

What about the research on breastfeeding mothers?

  • Chances of pre-menopausal breast cancer, cervical cancer and osteoporosis are reduced

  • The milk-producing hormone prolactin has a relaxing effect on mother and stimulates maternal instincts

  • On-going milk production burns calories, which helps with weight loss after pregnancy

How do I prepare for breastfeeding?

One great thing about breastfeeding is that you already have everything you need! However, you may still have questions on emotional or mental preparation, how to get started, how to handle your work situation and other topics. Mercy's Baby Feeding class is the perfect place to find those answers. The more you learn ahead of time about breastfeeding, the easier and more successful your experience with your new baby.

How do I get started?

Mother Nature is already taking care of a lot. Some general things you need to know to help you get started breastfeeding are:

  • How to position the baby correctly and comfortably

  • How to make sure baby is getting enough milk

  • How to minimize nipple soreness

  • How to manage engorgement

  • How to continue breastfeeding after returning to work

One of the best places to find out about these topics and help you prepare before baby's birth is Mercy's Baby Feeding class. After baby arrives, lactation consultants are available to help you while you're in the hospital or after you and baby have gone home.

Who can I call or where can I go for help?

Mercy lactation consultants staff a "Warm Line" from 9 am to 5 pm seven days a week. Just call 405-752-3586 for answers. The Family Library located in the Moms & More store at Mercy also houses a collection of books and videos that offers information on a variety of topics, including breastfeeding.

What exactly is a lactation consultant?

All Mercy lactation consultants are registered nurses who have earned certification in this specialty. They have successfully completed additional education and practice and passed a written exam required for board certification. All have earned the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) designation.

Where can I get the supplies I need?

At Moms & More, a unique retail store for expectant and new mothers. Located in the lobby of The Tower Physician Offices on the Mercy campus, Moms & More sells and rents breast pumps, and carries bras, nursing pillows, preemie clothing and diapers, and much more.
Store hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
