Should I be pre-admitted to
the hospital before I go into labor?
Yes, once labor begins, having been pre-admitted to your hospital is a
real time-saver. Complete the necessary paperwork during your pregnancy
and return it to the hospital admitting department. The admission form
will ask for your name, address, date of birth, social security number and
insurance information. An admission form is available on the Mercy
website, at your childbirth class or from the admitting office in the
hospital.
When you begin labor, call the BirthPlace to let the nursing staff know
you are on your way. The nurses will get your pregnancy records ready and
assign you to a room.

What safeguards are in place
for my baby's security in the hospital?
Most Mercy babies remain in the same room with their moms and family
during their hospital stay. This helps keep your baby safe and secure
while in the hospital. In addition, Mercy has several sophisticated
technologies for keeping your baby safe. You will learn about these when
you come to the hospital.
Never allow anyone to remove your baby from your room unless
that person is wearing a Mercy ID badge with a photo that matches their
face. Notify your nurse if you have any concerns about security.

What is infant rooming-in?
Rooming-in is an option available that allows your baby to
remain in the same room with you and your partner from birth until you go
home. If you need a little extra rest, Mercy's newborn nursery is
available 24-hours a day.
Rooming-in with your
baby helps you learn your baby's cues - how he or she responds when hungry,
tired or wants to be held. It is a great time to become well acquainted with
your baby and to learn all about his or her care - while you have nurses
nearby to help and instruct you.
Family members used
to worry that rooming-in might be too tiring for a new mother. But in fact,
many mothers actually rest better when their baby is in the room with them,
knowing exactly what is going on with their baby. Newborn babies sleep a
lot, and this gives you time to rest also.

What role does my nurse
play during
labor and delivery?
At Mercy BirthPlace, our nurses have years of experience. Your
nurse is your primary hospital resource and will do everything possible to
keep you comfortable during labor. Her job is to support you and your
support person. She will keep you informed of what to expect, answer your
questions and evaluate your baby's well-being. Your nurse serves as your
doctor's eyes and ears, communicating with your doctor about your
condition and progress of labor, carrying out your doctor's and your plan
for your care and notifying your doctor when it is time to come for your
baby's birth.
Keep your nurse
informed about your needs and your concerns. She wants to help you have a
safe and healthy birth and to have the birth experiences that you desire.
